Etihad & The Late Night Supper

Andy · November 21, 2024 · Leave a Comment

Any jaunt from Kuala Lumpur to Abu Dhabi comes at an odd time, and you can choose between whether you'd like to drink yourself to sleep, or do the same but first thing in the morning and then endure a breakfast to go with it. I obviously detest breakfasts of all in-flight varieties and so here we were; too late in the evening for dinner, but certainly not too late for a drinking binge and an assortment of snacks…

Airline: Etihad Airways EY417
Route: Kuala Lumpur – Abu Dhabi (Approx. 7 hours)
Class: Business

Departing after 9.30pm, one would be in no mood for an extravagant multi-course feast, but – having elected not to spend my time in the very dark and cave-like Malaysia Airlines lounge bar – I was certainly in the mood for a light snack, and sufficient drinks to tranquilise me for the remainder of the 7-hour journey.

The crew on this flight were par excellence and telepathically got the memo; the drinks were presented along with a ramekin of nuts with emergency-like haste, and they were more than happy to accommodate my slightly unorthodox steak sandwich and chicken satay order from the ‘anytime dining' menu.

As you can see from the picture and I am indeed delighted to confirm, my glass never came close to being empty for the entirety of the meal, before, and for about an hour afterwards, until it was time to retire for the night.

In terms of the food, I've found Etihad's steak sandwich to be reliably delicious and this was no exception – a meal in itself, and lightweight enough to still be able to get to sleep without all the huffing and puffing that would've come with devouring a 3-course sumptuous repast.

Meanwhile, I bet big on the satay being outstanding from Malaysia and I was thankfully not wrong – the only thing I might have got slightly incorrect was expecting that there'd be more than two sticks presented, though admittedly I could've asked for more if I hadn't been preoccupied…drinking myself to sleep.

Overall a great flight, wonderful food, and all the drink I could manage before requiring an urgent middle-age nap for several hours.

Why Inflight Dining?

Nothing in the history of commercial aviation beyond aircraft themselves seems to stir so much feeling, emotion and interest as one of the most basic questions of life; 'what's the food like?'. And you know what, it's usually pretty regrettable.
